Descriptions

Named after the most revered Hindu god of India, Lord Shiva, Mount Shivling is also known as Shivling Peak, is one of the sacred peaks of India, located in the Gaumukh Tapovan region of Uttarakhand. The old, glacial tooth-like peak stands at a staggering height of 6543m above the ground and is also close to the snout of Gangotri Glacier. Since many have already seen it in the images of Mount Shivling, it resembles a tooth-like snow-covered pyramid. That’s why many of the local people of Uttarakhand refer to it as Shiva Lingam. And many who have climbed this towering mountain call it their superficial victory!

The climb to Mount Shivling Peak is usually completed in 21 days from Uttarkashi. To make you aware, you will also be provided with some introduction training about climbing on the mountain during this itinerary, so you can leave your worries aside and book yourself for this amazing and sacred adventure.

Once you register yourself with Himalayan Holidays for the Mt. Shivling Peak Expedition, you will be warmly received in Uttarkashi, and from there, you set foot on an amazing and splendid journey that will be etched in your heart forever. You will have to traverse through a rocky path, jump on rough terrain, use ice axes for snow-covered steep slopes, hop on big boulder-ridden ramps, and peep-toe on narrow ridges. But once you touch the mountain top of this massive peak, you will witness the view of a lifetime: the sprawling meadows of Tapovan, the origination of River Bhagirathi, a small settlement of Gaumukh, widespread mesmerizing view of Gangotri Glacier, etc. And you will surely leave all your worries and tiredness behind after witnessing this surreal view.

Trip Highlight

  • An educational visit to the Forest Department at Gangotri.
  • A holy dip in the hot water spring of the River Bhagirathi.
  • Walk through the beautiful and sprawling meadows of Tapovan.

Program

Day 01 – Arrival in Uttarkashi

When you arrive at the Uttarkashi Bus Stand, you will be warmly received by one of our representatives, who will be your guide throughout this climb. He will then escort you to your resort in Uttarkashi, which is settled on a hillside and overlooks many different beautiful peaks of the Himalayas. Here at the resort, you will be asked for a government ID to check in to your rooms, and after this, you are free to enjoy the whole day as per your desire.

You can head out for a walk in the evening and also explore the vibrant local community of this place. Uttarkashi, or as the people of India call it, ‘Kashi of the North', is home to a few decades' old temples where worshipping the local deity is enough to spiritualize your soul and bring peace into someone’s chaotic life. You can visit at least two very famous temples here: Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a temple built by the biggest devotee of Lord Shiva, Parshuram, which is majorly worshipped by the locals, and Kuteti Devi Temple, a local deity temple for which people believe that it is one of the Shakti Dhams in India where people can get their wishes fulfilled.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 02 Uttarkashi - Gangotri: 100km

After you have breakfast in the morning by closely overlooking various famous peaks, you will get ready to first take a trip through the Forest Department of Uttarkashi, which is also the pride of Uttarakhand. The department looks after the thick forest cover and also safeguards the biodiversity of Uttarakhand. Later on, you will visit the local administration office, where you will go through an important paperwork session for the expedition.

Next, you will get ready to drive for Gangotri, which is about 100km away from Uttarkashi, and it takes about 4-5 hours to reach there because the bus has to drive on a very rocky path and cut through steep curves. You will witness the untouched beauty of the Himalayan region, where regional life is still lived by the people. Upon reaching Gangotri, you will check in to your guest house and retire for a relaxing sleep.

But if you are not tired and feel like walking along the regional lanes of Gangotri, then you can enjoy an evening trip through the town.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 03 – Gangotri – Bhojbasa: 14km, 4-5 hours

After having an early morning breakfast, you will get ready to start trekking towards your destination. You will be heading towards Bhojbasa today. So, this hike will warm your legs for the future trekking journey to the summit. Bhojbasa is about 14 km away from Gangotri, and it will take around 5–6 hours to reach this destination.

You will also enjoy a short stopover at Chirbasa, where you will feed on the packed lunch from Gangotri. Chirbasa lies on a rough mountain, but the trekking journey to this place is easy. You will only have to jump down a rough, rocky path settled along the river Bhagirathi. You will cross through the beautiful blue pine forest and chir forest while walking toward Chirbasa.

Next, you will walk towards Bhojbasa, where you will set up your first camp for this journey. Upon reaching Bhojbasa, you will enjoy eating beside the running water and also sleep to its sound.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 04 – Bhojbasa – Gaumukh – Tapovan/ Base Camp: 20km, 7-8 hours

Today also, you will be informed to wake up early and get done with your breakfast because you will have to walk a long distance on this day. You will get ready to walk towards Gaumukh, which is about 8 km away from Bhojbasa. Due to destruction by the cloudburst in 2013, the cracks have appeared on the glacial path and filled a boulder region, so there is a near-sheer cliff region to be traversed for this journey.

When you finish your lunch at Gaumukh, you will get ready to traverse a long path towards your second campsite, Tapovan. Due to the usual landslides, the path to Tapovan is quite difficult; you will have to walk down a sheer glacial path for the first half. As the distance to Tapovan starts to decrease, you will have to make a very stiff journey of 2km, which is quite dangerous. You will witness that Tapovan is home to several saints who have been meditating here for a long time. And apart from this, you can enjoy traversing through several meadows paired with falling streams.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 05 – 17 – Base Camp – Summit – Base Camp

The route from Base Camp to the summit is quite technical and full of steepness and falling seracs. You will have to set up two camps for the journey towards the summit: Base Camp 1 and Base Camp 2.

For Base Camp 1, you will jump on several narrow ridges and also hop on big boulder-ridden ramps, and upon reaching the place, you will also catch your first glimpse of Mount Shivling. Then, you will retire for the night because you will resume the journey again early in the morning.

For Base Camp 2, you will come under a phase where your real trekking skills will be applied as you walk on a thick glacial site and also use your ice axes to trace down some steep regions. Your roping skills will also come in handy here, as you will climb on an untraversable path too. Then, you will retire for the night because you will resume the journey again early in the morning.

At 2 am, you will resume your journey towards the summit, and upon reaching the summit after many hassles, you can cherish every moment of your journey. You will witness the view of a lifetime: the sprawling meadows of Tapovan, the origination of River Bhagirathi, a small settlement of Gaumukh, widespread, mesmerizing view of Gangotri Glacier, etc.

After making memories, you will descend back to your Base Camp 2 site and later to Base Camp 1.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 18 – Base Camp – Bhojbasa

Once again, after taking in the full view of Mount Shivling in your memories, you will get ready to retrace your long journey back to Bhojbasa and get another chance to pass through the same scenic journey. Once you reach Bhojbasa, you get under the same campsite alongside the river Bhagirathi and retire to a sleep dedicated to your victory on Shivling Peak.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 19 – Bhojbasa – Gangotri – Uttarkashi

Yeah, today you will leave for a long journey ahead, to the quaint little village of Uttarkashi. But first, you will make a stop at Gangotri, where you will enjoy your lunch after taking your last hike for this whole journey. Then, you will get ready to hop on a travel bus to drive back to Uttarkashi, where you will stay in a resort for the night.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 20 – Departure from Uttarkashi

After slurping down your breakfast before 10 a.m., your representative will drive you to the Uttarkashi Bus Stand, from where you can get on a bus to either Haridwar or Rishikesh. And from there, you will easily get any mode of transport to get back to your home.
