The name Guptkashi means "Hidden Benares." There is a myth that, when the Pandava brothers were in search of a view of Lord Shiva, initially, Lord Shiva hid at Guptkashi. But, later fled from them up the valley to Kedarnath, where the Pandavas finally got their wish fulfilled. The Kedarnath priests stay in Guptkashi during the winter months. Kedarnath temple closes in the winter, and the portrait of Kedarnath moves through Gupt Kashi to make the way towards Ukhimath (across the valley), where it stays for the winter. Besides, you can witness the gorgeous views of snow-covered Chaukhamba mountain peak in the morning times. The Guptkashi region is blessed with pleasant weather during summer. The remaining parts of Lord Shiva emerged at four other places that are worshipped there as his manifestations.
