Descriptions

The Ganges is considered the most sacred river in India. The legend is that the goddess Ganga descended on Earth from heaven at Gangotri, and so Gangotri is considered the source of the Ganges. There is a temple at Gangotri dedicated to Mother Ganges. Gangotri is one of the holy places and a dham among Char Dhams. The actual source of the Ganges is known as Gaumukh, which is 19 km from Gangotri. The original name of the stream is Bhagirathi, which originates from Gaumukh Glacier.

The trek follows the river upstream to the actual source at Gaumukh. The tour starts in the holy city of Rishikesh, known as the 'Gateway to the Himalayas'. Uttarkashi is another holy town on the way. This exciting trek offers a fantastic view of beautiful mountains like Shivling (6543 m), Meru, Kedar Dome, Sudarshan, and the Bhagirathi group of mountains. Places on the way to this tour are Rishikesh, Uttarkashi, Gangotri, Chirbasa, Bhojbasa, and Gaumukh.

Program

Day 01: Gangotri – Bhojbasa (3792m)                                   

The trek starts from Gangotri to Bhojbasa (3792 m), which is around 14 km and will take 6-7 hours. From Bhojbasa, you can have a majestic view of the Bhagirathi group of peaks. Overnight stay in GMVN or tent at Bhojbasa.

Meal: Dinner

Day 02: Bhojbasa - Gaumukh (3892m) – Tapovan (4400m)

After breakfast, proceed to Tapovan base camp (the base camp of Mount Shivling) via Gaumukh, which is the source of the Ganges River. Overnight stay in a tent in Tapovan.

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner

Day 03: Day Free - Tapovan (In Base Camp of Shivling)

Free day to explore Shivling base camp. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 04: Tapovan – Bhojbasa

Morning after breakfast, trek back to Bhojbasa. Overnight in Tents/GVMN.

Meals: Breakfast + Lunch + Dinner

Day 05: Bhojbasa – Gangotri

Today is the last day of the trekking portion of this tour, as you will be at Gangotri by afternoon. From Gangotri, depart for an onward destination.
