About The Trek:
Prashar lake is a beautiful and private location situated 49 km to the North of Mandi, with a plethora of river-rafting opportunities. One can also take a casual stroll through the streets or light up a bonfire and seep in the warmth wrapped up in the cool breeze coming from the lake. It is a doable trek for beginners. As scenic and breathtaking the view may seem, it is to be mentioned that the trekkers are required to remain well hydrated all throughout. And at times because of hailstorms or a rapid drop in temperature, the paths get covered by a thin sheet of ice which makes it all the more slippery. So it is advised to tread along carefully.

Key facts:
Days 1- Baggi Village to Prashar Lake
Altitude: 4,439 ft to 8,900 ft
Time Taken: 1-hour ride from Mandi to Baggi Village + trek for 5-5 hours for 7.5 km
Prashar Lake trek is a gradual incline for about 40 minutes followed by a steep ascend for a couple of hours. The road finally levels up and gives way to a 15minutes of a straight walk. Steep Incline from here on.
The Prashar Lake trek starts from the scenic Baggi Village which is a good 26km ride from Mandi. There is a road that goes from Baggi village to half a km from Prashar Lake. The road is often eroded due to hailstorms or harsh weather conditions. The road is also closed because of blockage due to snow in the months of January February.
Once the trek starts, look out for a freshwater source after 10 minutes into the trek. There will be a mountain stream to the right of the trail. It is safe to drink. Since this will be the only source of drinking water, it is advised to carry water to last you through the trek. A 15-20 minute walk along this trail leads to a bend in the road where there is a small stream. That is supposed to be the first landmark of this trip. It is at an elevation of 5,902 feet. Take a halt near the stream.
Resume the Prashar Lake trek by getting off the jeep trail and taking a kaccha rasta to the right. This is the start of a steep climb through a fairly dense forest. After, 30-40 minutes of the uphill climb, the trail will ease out for a brief moment. This leads to the first view of the magnificent snow-clad Dhauladhar Ranges. This trail may get slippery due to snow in winters. To ensure that your trekking shoes have a great grip. Further 10 minutes of steep ascent leads to a small patch of levelled ground. Look for a trident of Lord Shiva pitched deep into the ground. That is supposed to be the second landmark. It is at an altitude of 6,558 feet. However, the water is not safe for consumption purposes. Resume your climb through the forest which remains pretty much consistent for the next 45 minutes. There are three clearings that one might come across. One has to look out for the snow or grass while crossing the first two clearings and electricity wires while crossing the third.
The next landmark is going to be a series of shepherd dwellings on a levelled landscape at the top of a hill. These huts are used during the religious ceremonies and festivities. Further into the forest, one gets the first view of the Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal and Kinnaur peaks at their glory. Towards the left is a trail that meanders towards Prashar. From here one can spot the Prashar ridge behind which sits the Prashar lake gracefully.
There is a guest house run and maintained by the Forest Department on the top of the peak. Prashar is a further 800 metres away from here. As you reach the Prashar lake, you will notice a series of wooden huts and a beautiful temple right next to a semi-frozen lake. That would be your destination for the night.
