Roopkund trek package is most famous trek in Uttarakhand due to it's mystery of old skeletons submerged in the lake. The mystery till date is unsolved though there are some theories about it. National Geographic has done documentary on its unsolved mystery. Roopkund trek is a high altitude trekking in Uttarakhand Himalayan range. Trek to Roopkund gives a chance to hike through some of the most beautiful meadows of Uttarakhand namely Didna, Pattar nachuni, Bedni Bugyal. Most common trail for Roopkund trail starts from Lohajung and ends at Wan.

Roopkund Trek package information:

  • Roopkund Trek starts from Lohajung
  • For trekking to Roopkund the nearest Rail head is Kathgodam. Or someone can come via Rishikesh. but that will be more time consuming (approx. 12 hours) as only one bus operates to Lohajung which starts at 5am in morning and also may not operate during Char dham yatra festival.
  • From Kathgodam, Lohajung is approx. 220km away and takes a day to cover. The route goes via Almora, Kausani, Gwaldam, Tharali & Deval
  • The oxygen level in Roopkund Trek is considerably lower than normal
  • The best season is May to June and September to October. if you go to Roopkund Trek in May or October then high possibility that you will find heavy snowfall. Roopkund trek in June and September is also good
  • The difficulty level for Roopkund Trek is Moderate. However if you extend to Ronti saddle via Homkund then it will be difficult graded

Program

Day 1: Kathgodam to Lohajung

  • Distance: 240 km by car
  • Duration: ~10 hours
  • Highlights:
    • Scenic drive through Kumaon region.
    • Stop at scenic points and local eateries.
    • Arrival in Lohajung, check into your accommodation, and prepare for the trek.

Day 2: Lohajung to Didna

  • Trek Distance: 10 km
  • Duration: 4-5 hours
  • Highlights:
    • Trail through lush forests with rhododendron trees.
    • Interact with local villagers.
    • Camp at Didna, surrounded by beautiful views.

Day 3: Didna to Bedni Bugiyal

  • Trek Distance: 12 km
  • Duration: 6-7 hours
  • Highlights:
    • Gradual ascent to the stunning Bedni Bugiyal meadows.
    • Enjoy panoramic views of the Himalayas.
    • Ideal for photography and relaxation at the campsite.

Day 4: Bedni Bugiyal to Patar Nachuni

    • Set up camp at Patar Nachuni with views of Nanda Ghunti.

Day 5: Patar Nachuni to Baguabasa

    • Arrive at Baguabasa, the last campsite before Roopkund.

Day 6: Baguabasa to Roopkund and back to Patar Nachuni

    • Early morning trek to Roopkund Lake.
    • Explore the mysterious lake and its historical skeletons.
    • Return to Patar Nachuni for overnight camping.

Day 7: Patar Nachuni to Wan

  • Trek Distance: 18 km
  • Duration: 8-9 hours (including 1-hour drive back to Lohajung)
  • Highlights:
    • Long descent through scenic trails.
    • Enjoy views of the valleys and forests.
    • Transfer back to Lohajung by vehicle; rest and relax.

Day 8: Lohajung to Kathgodam

  • Distance: 220 km by car
  • Duration: ~10 hours

    • Departure from Kathgodam, ending the adventure.

How to Reach Roopkund

If coming from Delhi: Take the Ranikhet Express (5014) Dep. Delhi at 10:40pm arrival Kathgodam at 5:30am (Overnight Journey) or the Uttar sampark kranti (5035) Dep. Delhi at 4:00pm arrival Kathgodam at 10:40pm (6 hrs.40min.Journey).

If coming from Dehardun: Take the Doon Express (4120) Dep. Dehardun at 10:30 pm arrival Kathgodam at 7:10 pm (8hrs Journey)

By Bus: Regular buses also ply from ISBT Delhi Anand Vihar station to Kathgodam. Buses that go to Nainital stops at Haldwani which is a twin town of Kathgodham (8 hrs. Journey). Kathgodam to Haldwani distance in only 7 km approx.

What is the difficulty level of the trek?

Roopkund is an easy to moderate grade trek. Its  not a difficult trek.

While Trekking to Roopkund what should a trekker carry?

Be prepared to face cold weather and subzero temperature. Come prepared with good jacket, windcheater, Balaclava, gloves, trek pants. Wear clothes in layers so that you can adjust with the weather condition by adding or removing layers

Is there any group discount available for Roopkund trek?

Yes. If the group size is 6 or more then 10% group discount will be applicable.

How do I prepare for Roopkund trek?

Start some cardio exercise like long jogging, running prior to 1 month at least from the start day of the trek. Go for long walk or swimming. This will help you to acclimatize better and quickly

I haven't done any Himalayan trek before. Should I trek to Roopkund lake?

What is the chance of suffering from AMS while trekking to Roopkund lake?

For any high altitude trek, there is a certain amount of chance of suffering from AMS. Roopkund is also not an exception. But proper acclimatization can help avoiding AMS easily.

What about the safety during the trek?

Trek organizers do not provide any guarantee for safety. Experienced guide and team will be there with each group to take care of any issue. Oxygen cylinder, first aid facility will be available during trek. For any medical emergency on spot decision will be taken by trek leads.

Will I get packaged drinking water while trekking?

You will get normal drinking water at each camping point. If you want mineral water then you can buy whenever available enroute

Roopkund trek distance:

Total trek distance is around 60km that you will cover in 6 days of trekking. Out of the 8 days of total event first and last day are transportation day when you travel from Kathgodam to Lohajung and back

Roopkund trek difficulty level:

Roopkund is a breathtakingly beautiful trek in Uttarakhand. And the best part is it is not a difficult trek. If you are physically fit and mentally strong you can trek to Roopkund easily. The last part of the trekking i.e. from Roopkund, trek to Junargali is a very steep trek which can be termed almost as climbing is a difficult part and you may need a rope for this with proper guidance. Trek to Junargali depends some extent on the weather also. Roopkund trail is a very beautiful trail and difficulty level is easy to moderate, where you have to be prepared to hike long distances and getting awestruck by the beauty of Himalaya

Roopkund + Junargali trek can be done in a single day:

Yes. Roopkund and Junargali is done on a single day only. Junargali peak is 30 minutes climbing from Roopkund under guidance. As you can not pith your tent at Roopkund its difficult to do Junargali again next day. It means you have to trek again to Roopkund from Baguabasa and then climb Junargali

Roopkund trek booking:

Booking for Roopkund trek opens 3-4 months prior the trek date. Roopkund trek best time are May 3rd week to June end and Mid September to October end.

Roopkund trek in May, June

Day temperature: 15° to 20°C. Night temperature: 4° to 7°C.
Campsite temperature: Daytime 5°C to 10°C. Nighttime: 3° to -2°C. (Bhagwabasa is the highest camp)
Rain: This is pre monsoon. So chances of rain negligible. But afternoon shower is quite common in high altitude. This is not a monsoon rain
Snow: Roopkund trek in May june is a full fledged snow trek. Heavy snow in may, reduced to comforatble snow level in June

Roopkund trek in September, October

Temperature in Sept and Oct
Day temperature: 13° to 20°C. Night temperature: 2° to 7°C.
Campsite temperature: Daytime 3°C to 10°C. Nighttime: 3° to -4°C. (Bhagwabasa is the highest camp)
Rain: This is post monsoon. So chances of rain negligible. Can face afternoon shower
Snow: Little snow in september. From October 1st week its likely to start fresh snowfall

Inclusion Details

  • Two nights stay at Lohajung (1st & 7th) on twin/triple sharing basis and dinner.
  • All meals during trek. Nutritious vegetarian food will be provided during the trek (including
    eggs). Breakfast packed/freshly cooked lunch (depending upon the time  you reach campsite), snacks, dinner. Coffee/tea/soup.
  • Knowledgeable and excellent local Mountain Guide, with profound knowledge of the trekking route around.
  • Specialized Cook, Support staffs, Porters/Packed Animals for carrying the common articles of the trek.
  • All permit fee, camping charges in those areas, Forest levy required by the officials for the trek.
  • Stay at rest house/forest hut/tent as required in the trek.
  • Sleeping Mattress and Sleeping Bag (Bring your own sleeping bag for hygienic reason, if you have a high altitude specific Sleeping Bag)
  • Car drop from Wan to Lohajung on last day of trek i.e. 7th day

Exclusion

  • Transportation from Kathgodam to Lohajung and back.
  • Personal porter to carry your ruksack. Additional Rs 1500 for the entire duration of the trek, if you need personal porter. This amount may increase also.
  • The Rucksack should not weigh more than 10 Kg. otherwise it will be difficult to carry
  • Any insurance during the trek or transit.
  • Any cost which is not mentioned in the “inclusions” or personal in nature.
